Great Bend’s Wetlands Waterpark at 2303 Main opened Memorial Day weekend and is open from 12:30-5:30 p.m. daily when there are no weather hazards and the forecasted high temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The pool also offers family nights with $2 admission from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Prices remain unchanged this year. All persons entering the pool enclosure, including supervising adults, must pay the appropriate fees: $4 for adults 18 years and older; $3 for youths 3-17 years old; with children under 3 admitted free.
Discount passes for 15 admissions are $40. The pool accepts cash, checks, debit cards and credit cards.
Pool Manager Megan Hammeke said all of the favorite features of the park are back this year, including the 300-gallon tipping bucket, the slides and the “water balloon wars.”
Hammeke, who also manages aquatics programs at Great Bend Recreation Commission — along with programs for senior citizens and people with special needs — said the city has employed 32 lifeguards this summer.
“We must have 15 guards on duty at any time,” she said. The attraction also employs 11 concession workers. These summer jobs are open to people 15 years of age or older. All of the jobs for this year have been filled. The staff includes Brittnee Barber as concessions manager and Justin Kuhlman, one of the head lifeguards, as weekend manager.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will also offer swim lessons. For information on lessons call the Rec Center, 620-793-3755, or email www.greatbendrec.net.
A few things parents should know:
• Children ages 7 and under will not be admitted to the aquatic facility without appropriate supervision (i.e., responsible person 15 years of age or as determined by Aquatics Director or designee).
• A baby-sitter registration form must be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian if a baby-sitter is allowed to bring children to the pool. Forms and season passes can be picked up/purchased at the front desk of the pool.
• All slide riders must meet minimum height requirements as designated (40 inches tall on water feature).
• No combs or foreign objects are allowed in pockets while riding the slides. Swimwear (including life jackets) with zippers, buckles, rivets, or any other metal ornamentation will not be allowed on the slides.
All rules are posted on the water park website, www.greatbendwaterpark.com. The site also shows weather conditions.
